During 2024, Inner City Scaffolding were contracted to commence works on the culturally important 220-year-old Grade II* listed Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, which as part of the Royal Pavillion Estate was due essential restoration work to its roofing structure, bringing it up to 21st Century standards.

Funded by a conjoined pot of almost £1.5 Million from the Arts Council, £500,000.00 from Brighton & Hove City Council and its own monies, the building will undergo upgrades to its two large glazed roofs, replicating the original Georgian lighting scheme, using daylight to reduce energy costs, it will also improve ventilation and insulation to improve its carbon performance, whilst ensuring that it is critically watertight, protecting the plethora of British, European and American Decorative Art, which even includes amongst many priceless pieces a toy toolbox containing miniature tools including a mallet, corkscrew and a screwdriver, made by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known as author, photographer and mathematician Lewis Carroll.

To provide what the specialist Principal Contractor, and Sub-contractors require to undertake their works, Inner City Scaffolding have consulted, had designed, and are currently delivering an extremely complex access, logistics and temporary roofing scheme, that has had to contend with reduced to little tie availability due to the buildings listed status and reduced load capacity, lesser foundation availability caused by protection orders, low capacity substrates and work surfaces that require upgrade during the project, and topography plus requirement to keep elements open and in full service. To overcome these key challenges, the following has and is being undertaken by Inner City Scaffolding: –

  • Over 400 hours of scope, review, investigation, design, and streamlining has been undertaken to achieve scheme acceptance and ‘A’ Status Design plus Calculation
